french-style yogurt cake with lemon and cream cheese marbled brownies

September 7, 2009

Ella Frances, now age 13, has been on a baking extravaganza since summer ended.  The cooler weather helped, as did access to her new Kitchen Aid mixer.  We have been the happy recipients of two baked items from two of my favourite food bloggers – Orangette and Smitten Kitchen.  I miss Orangette’s posts – she’s been busy at her new restaurant Delancey in Seattle.  And Smitten Kitchen is about to have a baby…and the way I vaguely recall that babies take over alllll your time, even when they are sleeping…well, I think she might be on hiatus for a while.  But thankfully both these talented chicks have a healthy archive of recipes.

First, from Molly Wizenberg’s book, A Homemade Life, French-Style Lemon Yogurt Cake.  Ella made this the day we returned from holidays because we had no butter in the house.  But we did have lots of lemons.  Molly has a delightful story preceding this recipe in her book about this cake helping her find her husband Brandon.  Brandon moved to Seattle from the east coast to join Molly.  They have a very sweet love story.

So this cake, while not made of butter, is made of love.  It is the syrup and the icing that nails it…it makes it soft and a bit crunchy, and this disappeared very quickly from the counter in our kitchen.  The recipe is on Orangette here.  Click through!  I know you want to.

Next up was an ambitious recipe from Deb at Smitten Kitchen.  I love the way Ella is up for tackling any recipe.  Nothing scares her.  Ya gotta love a fearless baker.  The recipe is here.  Yes, I’m too lazy to type it out.  Just click through!  Although the brownie at the sides of the pan ended up a bit crunchy, the middle was plain delicious.  Soft chocolate cake with chunks of cream cheese – it is impossible to go wrong there.
