chocolate truffle tart for ella

August 14, 2009

Isaac and Ella’s birthdays are three years apart, minus a day.  Ella was two weeks early and Isaac was four days overdue.  I cannot explain this phenomenon, but Isaac says Ella arrived the day before his birthday just to ruin his third birthday party.  Which was meant to be held at the Children’s Museum in Winnipeg, because that’s where we were living at the time.

Nonetheless, we have two celebrations in a row each year.  I’ve never combined the two birthdays, and just slug it out one day after another.  This year we will be in Ireland for their real birthdays – so we are doing fake birthdays instead.  There is some grumbling about this, but the grumblers will just have to lump it.

The lovely Ella Frances is now officially a teenager.  She reads (twilight, twilight, twilight), plays competitive soccer and is a talented evolving baker.  She also has a huge heart.  And she is super smart to boot.

For dinner, her special request was:  Barefoot Contessa’s Parmesan Chicken, honey ginger carrots and gnocchi.  With Chocolate Truffle Tart for dessert, by way of Orangette by way of Gourmet magazine.

And, the icing on the cake was the look on Ella’s face as she cradled her gift.  Which she has to share with her mother, but she can take with her when she moves out of the house.

Happy birthday to both and have a great trip! I just saw Once a couple of nights ago so my Ireland envy is definitely intensified by that — what a great movie. Hope to see you all when you get back.
