the best view in town

May 31, 2009

The grand old dame, the Hotel Macdonald,  really has the best view in the city.  Show up at the Confederation Lounge and snag a patio table, and you will make the most of our very brief summer.   Plus, many rock stars and hockey players stay there when in town.  Two summers ago, we spotted the members of Motley Crue there.

I love going there when the Folk Fest is setting up across the river – you can witness the fences and tents being constructed.  That’s summer in Edmonton.

I’ve had the good fortune to go to the Confederation Lounge twice in the past week.  I ate the moist Westbury Devilled Dungeness Crab Cakes that were accompanied by an amazing crisp bean sprout and avocado side.  Last night, before the Kokopelli concert, I had the Warm Tuna Nicoise, which was sadly overcooked and not rare at all,  but the side of potatoes and beans were delish.

It is hard to find fault with this place.  The service is impeccable and the food is local, and superb.   And while appetizers and cocktails for two equals $80, it is a splurge well spent.  Here’s the menu.

ps:  Don’t bother with the Mariott Courtyard patio next door.  The view is similar, but the service is surly – it is almost impossible to compete with a Fairmont property, for Fairmont’s staff are exceedingly gracious.
